The RYA Powerboat Instructor course teaches all you need to train beginner boaters RYA Powerboat Level 1 and level 2. If you have your RYA Safety Boat certificate it also enables you to teach the RYA Safety Boat course.
Depending on where and when you do the course, expect to pay between £300 - £500 (Approx. US $460-$770, or 410-680 EUROS).
You should complete an RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment before enrolling on the course – this costs around £135 (Approx. US $210, or 185 EUROS)
You will be able to teach RYA Powerboat Level 1 and 2 or if you have Safety Boat accreditation, this course as well.
The five day course covers a lot of theory but there will be a fair amount of practical, hands on training too. You will be expected to be proficient in powerboat handling, and as such you will not learn much about how to drive one – this is a teacher training course and is more about guiding people through the syllabus than learning new powerboat skills.
Yes, you can take the course at any school around the world that is accredited by the RYA to teach it. Click the ‘View Courses Now’ button at the top of the page to find available courses.
As a minimum you should have one full season’s experience (as a professional seafarer) or five years experience as a leisure sailor, as well as RYA Powerboat Level 2 – or Safety Boat if you wish to teach this as well. You will be expected to pass a test showing your competence before doing the training course.
You should also have a valid First Aid certificate, and ideally possess the RYA Day Skipper certification. You must be 16 or over to begin the course.
The duration of the course is three days, to include homework every evening.
Over three days’ intensive tuition you will learn the skills to teach people how to take a range of powerboats on the water, and guide them through the RYA syllabus. A full explanation of the course is covered on the RYA website, showing you the standards of proficiency you will be expected to meet.
From here you should be able to begin the training required to reach the RYA Advanced Powerboat Training certificate. This requires a very high level of skill – including commercial endorsements.
Not specifically though you can work abroad, teaching the RYA Powerboat syllabus.
